Anita on Joy

I recently spent some time with Anita and she is a breath of fresh air. Ever know someone who exudes joy? This is that person. Her smile lights up the room. This year has been tough for most everyone and she has decided to choose joy in the midst of it all. Anita is even wearing festive earrings everyday till Christmas because it simply brings her joy. I’ve found that when people do things that bring them joy it is contagious and that’s so true with Anita.

I got to ask her a few questions:

What does Joy is a Revolution mean to you?

To me it means that joy is how we change the world. Choosing to pursue and find joy daily is an act of revolting against all the external forces that say we should not be joyful and that we have less to be thankful for and proud of than we truly do.

What led you to find your joy?

I was tired of being swayed so heavily by things I could not control. Finding joy reminds me that God is in control and the center of it all through whatever storm comes my way.

Who benefits from Joy?

I’d say primarily the person seeking it! Joy gives me a pep in my step for the day and helps me love others well as a by product

The world can feel like a constant attack against us and a series of endless mountains we have to climb.

What would you say to someone who is trying to find joy in their everyday life?
Finding joy in the little things makes bigger joy so much easier in time. Sometimes the only thing to be joyful for is the sun shining or the smell of your morning coffee, and that is enough

Why do you feel Black Joy important?

The world can feel like a constant attack against us and a series of endless mountains we have to climb. Black joy is important because it helps us acknowledge that though we have work to do, we can enjoy it along the way and celebrate the fact that daily existence is a reason to celebrate

How did you end up where you are now in terms of your job or whatever endeavor you are pursuing?

Currently I’m pursuing a career as an architect and getting my professional license. I’m 1.5 years post undergrad at Syracuse University so it’s still in the beginning phases but I ended up here truly by the clear direction of God. It’s not where I ever thought I wanted to be but after applying to over 80 jobs, only one door opened and after a big step of faith through it, here I am!

What would you say to someone who is trying to find joy in their everyday life?

Finding joy in the little things makes bigger joy so much easier in time. Sometimes the only thing to be joyful for is the sun shining or the smell of your morning coffee, and that is enough.
