Black Joy is a Revolution

I’m always in awe of the spirit of black people. There’s not a more resilient people. No matter what is happening its in our DNA to find the good in every situation, to crack a joke in a tense moment.

There’s power in black joy. It’s contagious. It’s magical. It is what gospel music is made of, it’s what soul food is made of, you can’t help but smile when you are in the midst of it.

Black joy is what happens when you look for joy in the places you have been told joy would never be. It doesn’t fit what has been seen before.

Black joy should be protected, it should never be compromised, it is a visceral experience that roots deep. It seems to grow with every experience that was created to hurt, dismiss and breakdown. This joy is our birthright, it is saturated with beauty and cloaked in peace.
